Why mulch every year

Mulch breaks down and loses its punch over time. A fresh application once or twice a year keeps beds looking great, protects plant roots through Rhode Island winters, and cuts down the weeds you fight all summer.

Common mulching mistakes to avoid

Volcano mulching is the most frequent one we see: piling mulch high against the base of a shrub or tree trunk. It looks tidy from a distance but it traps moisture against the bark, invites rot and insects, and slowly kills the plant. The right move is to keep mulch a few inches back from any trunk or stem and keep the layer flat and even across the bed.

Piling new mulch on top of old without clearing out the base is the other common problem. Old mulch compacts over time and turns into a barrier that sheds water rather than absorbing it. Your plants end up sitting in dry soil under what looks like a freshly mulched bed. We pull back and check what is underneath before anything new goes down, and we start the new layer from a clean, level base so the beds actually drain and breathe the way they should.
